Janet Brooking

Executive Director

Janet Brooking has served as the executive director of DRIVE SMART Virginia since May of 2005. Janet's career in public service began 20 years ago when she served as the accountant for a large association. She then spent several years working as a campaign operative, in roles from field organizer to finance director. Having worked both on Capitol Hill and at the Virginia General Assembly, Janet has viewed government from both the federal and state level. Given the opportunity to work in the sports marketing field, Janet joined the group Medalist Sports to help organize the Tour DuPont, a cycling race that toured down the east coast. The last ten years have been spent as State Campaign Director for the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign, through which Janet raised more than $28,000,000 for charity. She collaborated with every state agency in Virginia to help them conduct the campaign in their workplace. Her board included political appointees and agency heads.

Janet received her bachelors of science from Mary Baldwin College and her Certificate in Philanthropy from the University of Richmond. She is also a graduate of the Virginia Collaborative Leaders Program through the Institute for Educational Leadership. Finally, her awards include a 1999 Medallion Award from the Public Relations Society of America for a video, and, in 2000, the award from her peers at the Department of Human Resource Management for being most "Results Driven" in the agency.

Janet's non-profit work has included being a docent at the Maymont Nature Center, and serving on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Read Center.
