A Story About Persistence

John Meola
Richmond, VA

As a safety professional, it seemed natural to bring my work home, particularly when my 2 teenage daughters became of driving age.  I recall preaching to them about the importance of using Daytime Running Lights, in the days before they were “automatic”.  They had to pull the light switch, and it must have been a huge nuisance to them.  They said it was geeky and nerdy, etc., but with “persistence” they started to do it.  I almost fell off my chair when the youngest came home one day and she announced “Hey Dad, those lights really work!”  She explained how she had a close call in a parking lot and apparently the lights did their job, and she understood it.

From that day, they have been “true believers”.  It was reassuring to know they were listening to at least some of the “nerdy” safety advice coming from their parents.

Battle of the Belts

Florida Highway Patrol
Florida

The Florida Highway Patrol used the natural rivalry of schools to promote friendly competition. Students at each school created campaigns, slogans, and promotional programs to improve their seatbelt compliance. Awards were given for the school with the best overall compliance rate and the most improved compliance rate.
