Distracted Driving

Driving distracted can be deadly, buckle up, phone down.

Did you know that 8 out of 10 traffic crashes in Virginia are related to a distracted driving incident? It’s true.  A quick look away from the road could cause a serious crash that could injure you, your passengers, or someone in another car.

Cell phone use has been identified as a serious cause of distraction. When you talk on the phone your focus is on the conversation and your brain activity associated with driving is reduced by almost 40%.

Texting and driving, or checking out Facebook or Twitter on your smartphone, is the most dangerous thing you can do when you drive. You increase your chance for a crash 23 times.

What else causes distracted driving? ANYTHING that takes your eyes and/or mind off the road.

We work with employers, government agencies, law enforcement, and safety advocates to educate Virginia drivers on how to be safe behind the wheel. Throughout the year, but especially in April, you’ll find events highlighting the dangers of distracted driving. You can order materials, download items from our Toolkit including a sample press release, activity ideas, employee letters and emails. We also encourage you to sign our on-line safety pledge to drive distraction free.

Together we can work to keep Virginia's roadways safe and distraction free for everyone.

“Too often people don’t realize how dangerous it is to look away from the road for just two seconds. It can be deadly.” Janet Brooking, Executive Director DRIVE SMART Virginia
