Phone Down Just Drive

The Phone Down. Just Drive. campaign is focused on educating commercial motor vehicle drivers on the dangers and laws surrounding distracted driving. This project is a partnership between DRIVE SMART Virginia and the Virginia State Police. During this upcoming year, the project will travel around Virginia with outreach tables, signage, CB messaging, and enforcement efforts. Look for the Phone Down. Just Drive. team at truck stops, rest areas, and travel plazas around the Commonwealth.

Before picking up that phone, consider this:

  • 80% of traffic crashes and 65% of near crashes involve a distracted driving incident within 3 seconds of the crash (VTTI)
  • Drivers who use hand-held devices are 4 times more likely to be in a crash serious enough to injure themselves (US DOT)
  • Transportation and material moving occupations had the highest number of workplace fatalities in Virginia last year (CFOI)
  • Every 4 days, an employee dies in a work-related crash (DOL)
  • Texting drivers take their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds (VTTI)
  • Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be involved in a safety critical event than a driver not texting (VTTI)

If you need to make a call or respond to a text, there are better options than driving distracted:

  • Pull into a safe place such as a rest area or travel plaza
  • Keep your phone in a place where you won’t be tempted to reach for it while driving like in the back seat or glove compartment
  • Download a phone app that prevents distracted driving

Stay safe out there and remember to remain focused on the road! Phone Down. Just Drive.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

“Too often people don’t realize how dangerous it is to look away from the road for just two seconds. It can be deadly.” Janet Brooking, Executive Director DRIVE SMART Virginia
